SS13 Christian Dior Collection
Salma Sabar

Raf Simons proved that he can handle the house of Dior with his creative vision.

This season the runways have been super busy in London, New York, Milan and Paris Fashion Week. The attendees were fashion lovers, journalists and buyers all eagerly waiting to see the latest collections from their favourite designers. One of the most eagerly awaited collections was by Raf Simons for his debut for Christian Dior at Paris Fashion Week. Fans and fashions fanatics were all excited to see what Raf Simons bought to the house of Dior. Any changes? New creative ideas?

To our delight Raf Simons proved that he can handle the house of Dior with his creative vision. Most of the onlookers were excited to see the presentation in Paris. Previously John Galliano had become the creative genius at Dior and most respected amongst his peers for his creative drive and flair. So these shoes were tough to fill and expectations were high. Previously, Raf Simons has had a vast amount of experience at his own menswear fashion line and by being a creative director at Jill Sanders. However, this was not enough until the SS13 Collection was presented.

Some elements of the Christian Dior presentation represented a pop of colour which is perfect for the summer months. Raf Simons had concentrated on creating simple silhouettes and by incorporating colour. The overall elements of the dresses were kept minimal and fresh. The ball gown dress was a feature in the presentation which is a prime iconic style for Christian Dior in the 1950’s. Some of the gowns were strapless with a large volume of tulle and reflective organza. Some dresses had a higher hem line at the front and a lower line at the back. Instantly, creating a unique shape to the dress. This created an elegant yet a sophisticated look.

Whilst, other designs consisted of sleeveless shift dresses, with a pop of neon colours. A slimmer silhouette, ankle skirt walked down the runways with metallic large roses. Creating a more modern inspired look. Raf Simons concentrated on creating a collection that would represent the summer months by keeping the dresses simple but still remaining modern.

Monochrome and masculine tailoring has seemed very popular in the collection. The trouser suit is revamped to create a masculine look with a feminine appeal. The models were caught wearing tailored tuxedos with silk lapels finished off with a pair of evening shorts or cropped black trousers. There was also some pleats and godets that were injected into the pieces. The females were also wearing coloured neck bows which gave the outfit a more feminine and a graceful feel. This part of the collection consisted of silhouettes that were popular back in the 1940/1950s therefore revising the archives of Dior. The minimalist theme proved successful throughout the collection.

Raf Simons has done a brilliant job in creating a collection that is true to the house of Dior whilst also adding a contemporary twist to the brand. Simons goal was to create pieces that woman would fall in love and for women to feel liberated with fashion. The presentation had proved that Raf Simons was the right choice for Dior as he is keen to continue the history of Christian Dior with his architectural designs.

Winter Coats
Salma Sabar

The designer option may not be affordable for some however, it is easier to purchase your cocoon from Topshop and H&M

Winter will have its fair share of rain, wind and cold. So it will be necessary to wrap up warm in a stylish coat. Lucky for us, as this winter the biggest trend is the winter coat made with warm comfortable materials in stylish designs. You can go to work, college or university in fabulous coats with the perfect silhouette. You have a range of options to choose from ranging from the trench to the fur coat. So many options to choose from! This winter we will need to get used to the Cocoon Coat. The coat is oversize and shapeless yet a trend to look out for. The main feature of this coat is its size and length which tends to be long and over the top. This is perfect for cold winter days and there is a guarantee that you will be kept warm. Although this is a shapeless coat, the beauty is that it comes in a variety of colours and shapes. The coat is available in bright colours in orange from Burberry or you can opt out for duller varieties like black, brown and grey. Another option would be to wear the coat which has some sort of a pattern. The main silhouette for this coat is the same but different designs are created from different brands. In the winter you could choose a coat with a larger lapels, buttons, large pockets, smaller sized buttons or double breasted. The designer option may not be affordable for some however, it is easier to purchase your cocoon from Topshop and H&M.

If you like to wear a shorter coat then the Pea coat is perfect which, was traditionally worn by sailors in Navy blue. This coat is classic and which tends to be in trend after a certain amount of years. Usually this coat is hip length and maybe a little longer. The appearance of this coat is that is has lapels, large buttons, double breasted and has vertical and slash pockets. This coat is mostly available in wool or cotton mix. It can be worn in black, navy, camel, caramel and in mud green. Once again the silhouette of the coat remains the same but designers have used their creativity to alter the coat. Alterations are normally the colour, size of buttons and size of the lapels. This coat can be worn with a mini skirt as it tends to balance the coat and the key is to wear the coat so the buttons are all done. This way the coat will fit the body well and enhance its appearance. Mango sells a variety of versions of the Pea coat ranging from £60.00 and above.

This winter it would be perfect to wear the Cape. The cape is usually loose fitted with large arms. It is usually stylish for women as it creates a feminine silhouette. The cape fits perfectly on the shoulders and is normally mid- thigh length. This outer wear comes in different colours like grey and black but there is also an option to wear a patterned designed like the leopard print. There is an option to purchase the coat with or without arms. Traditionally the Cape was worn as an outer wear garment without arms however, fashion designers now also create it with full arms yet still remaining the Cape effect. It is a perfect to fit with a pair of skinny jeans or a pair of cigarette trousers. As this trend goes well with masculine tailoring, as it can help to define the whole style and provide it with a softer edge. The Perfect Cape can be available from Oasis in an array of colours.

So what would it be this winter, the Cocoon, Pea Coat or the Cape?

We all want to wear a beautiful dress but it might be different story in winter. The weather can be unpredictable, cold and dull. You might want to go out to have a good time and realised that you don’t have the appropriate dress. We all want to be all covered up and all warm when it’s a little cold. A long sleeved jersey dress is brilliant to wear on any occasion plus it’s also a benefit to you, because you can wear it in winter. This type of dress is normally a knit fabric which can be made out of wool, cotton and synthetic fabrics. Jersey material is normally very warm and lightweight. You can try out block colours such as Black, Blue, Navy and Grey for that extra bit of sophistication and elegance. If you choose to wear one block colour then you can definitely play around with accessories. Why not try to add a long necklace as a statement piece or even wear some bangles. Do you want to look stylish and fabulous? Well…… then choose a Shift dress. These became popular in the 1960’s as many icons were wearing them. This included Twiggy, Audrey Hepburn and Mia Farrow just to name a few. A shift dress is simple, its symmetrical and most importantly it can look sexy on any woman. When shift dresses were originally created to be sleeveless however as decades went by sleeves were added to the dress. It is usually knee length and can include a boat neck or a high collar with sequins or embellishments. A shift dress is made out of beautiful lightweight material with chiffon arms sometimes added with a cuff. If you want a little texture to your dress then you can wear a shift dress with horizontal pleats which adds volume and uniqueness to the dress. You can complete your look with a pair of course Killer heels!

A long sleeved wrap dress is just Classy. These have been worn by women all over the world. Fashion Designers like Diane Von Furstenberg and Donna Karen have made it their mantra, that a wrap dress is the ultimate dress for a woman. This has actually been true. When designers showcased these designs to the world they sold out like hot cakes! A wrap dress is knee length with a V-neck and long arms. It is made out of stretch material and has a belt at the waist so that it fits the body well. If you want your dress to be different then you need to be daring. The Art of Make Do Shoe
Aruna Jacobs

The scene is Florence, a city of crazy cuteness where the shops are as small as the streets and filled with the prettiest goodies a girl could dream off. From vintage to fresh from the catwalk, from silky layers to robust leather footwear. Florence has it all. While Mark Twain would argue that "naked people have little or no influence on society" there are plenty of beautiful barely dressed artworks on display that have made this city plenty famous! (There is hardly a prettier panorama of the city then from the Piazza Michelangelo with a gorgeously lit David) However, I have not seen a single naked tourist so far. On the contrary, the summer seems to be filled with feather-light fairy-like chiffon skirts and dresses. After a few years of vacuum tight short summer wear it is lovely to see some increased freedom to walk. Free those legs! Let them breathe in all the romance that vibrates in the air of this magnificent city!

There is not a single dress that cannot be re-worn as new when you improvisingly wrap a nice scarf around it to render it a sophisticated look

I arrive in the centre of town to join my friend Joy, a young aspiring shoe designer who came to Florence to study fashion. She is my shoe guru and my inspiration. Today is her birthday so we have decided to spend some cash on celebratory footwear. It is rather difficult to express yourself fashionably if you have only a small suitcase of your selected summer clothes for two months. This is where a special art comes in: the art of make do! Make do with whatever is on hand. Combine and mix, tear and fix. There is not a single dress that cannot be re-worn as new when you improvisingly wrap a nice scarf around it to render it a sophisticated look. Our mission today is to find that special jewel that can match plenty a look and make it smashing. In the vicinity of the gigantic Duomo we dive into a little boutique, right into the arms of a gorgeous and rather theatrical young shoe seller. His charming smile is as swift as his paces as he runs up the stairs to fetch Joy’s dream shoes. While joking with us in his Italian English he unlaces and softens the fresh leather. It was love upon first fit, the leather embraced her feet like perfect gloves and the altitude was cushioned by comfortable design.

Ten minutes later we walk back to Joy’s apartment, she grew about ten centimetres by footwear and two extra by pride. Her new high beige-brown friends wear a plenty of spiky metal studs.

She could easily outkick any unwanted male attention with those darlings! While we finish our conversation an American man on a terrace next to us starts gaily making pictures of her sparkly feet. He is but the first of her admirers, many men show admiration while some women look slightly green with envy. If not for the shoes themselves, but for the bravery to wear these high attention bombs. Luckily my dear friend remains unaffected. She feels perfectly comfortable and confides in me that "if shoes are convenient and comfortable it is like a boyfriend who treats you well, if they are not comfortable they are like a boyfriend who cheats on you!". Quite true. We should not content with what is make do. We should choose wisely. That is the art of make shoe!

Peplum Trend
Vera

So what do we call a trend? Dictionary says that is “the general course or prevailing tendency; often occur in clothing, music, and vernacular”. This year we have got a huge trend, Peplum. It is impossible not to notice this one, it appears everywhere. We have peplum tops, peplum dresses, even peplum jackets. So what is a peplum? Peplum refers to a piece with a ruffle around the waist, which adds volume while creating a flattering hourglass shape which we desire so, that is perfect idea for women with small hips. Now, everywhere I go I can see peplum clothes. Every store showcases it, in offices, at cocktail parties and even in the park. This is what we love in fashion, a trend that you can use in every occasion. That kind of trend is peplum. Let’s start with peplum tops. Perfect matching with skinny trousers or pencil skirts. Light colors like pastel or coral make it great idea for daytime. I love peplums by Vera Wang, she makes them sooo light but at the same time futuristic. We have rich floral prints and semi-colored tops as well.

What about other designers? Givenchy! I always check latest collection by Givenchy. Hubert was well-known for his ladylike and modern styles, of course the most popular client was Audrey Hepburn who wore his clothes in movies like “Sabrina”, “How to steal a million” and obviously “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. This collection is so glamorous and classy. White peplum top is absolutely my favorite.
Givenchy presents something for the night party, silver-plum top incrusted with sequins.

What’s next? Dresses. Red carpet is full of peplum dresses. In every style that could be imagined from classic, to futuristic and retro. Stunning, classic, canary-yellow Rachel Roy’s dress worn by Solange Knowles for the 2012 MET Gala blew me away! Personally, the best peplum dress I've seen so far.

Eva Mendes seems to be peplum fan as well, but for me skirt is too heavy, this is what we would like to avoid. This combination let her look more old then she really is… and sort of auntie-like. Eva, come on! You’re young, beautiful woman! You could do it better.

Jessica Stem. Probably she wanted to be very fashionable, well and she is but at the same time she resembles a giant meringue! Yummy!!! :D

If you don’t like too much dresses and skirts you always have a choice. Choice is Jacket.
Here for our confident women we present Alexander McQueen’s

My apology, but I had to once AGAIN – Givenchy. Fabulous!!!

Why looking for peplum jackets, I forgot about Burberry! Oh shame on me! Look at that!

Leather Jacket with point collar and chest pockets.

Burberry was created for Jackets!!!! What a style and original ideas! It might be just a tweed jacket but the combination of colors and fabrics makes it unique and beautiful.

Hope you've got some ideas and inspirations about peplum trend if you haven't already.
Tell us about yours. Would you wear peplum?
If so, what clothes ?

Share your opinion with us!!!

See you soon.

Fashion Designers like Valentino, Chanel, Armani and Karl Lagerfeld have injected all their creative passion in creating timeless dresses that would leave heads turning. Beautiful fabrics like sheer, silk and Satin help create the figure hugging silhouette. To help accentuate, curves of a woman. We are spoiled rotten with the choices out there by Fashion Designers. Maybe this is our Love Affair with Designer Dresses. A designer dress is a piece of garment that you know you it will be in your wardrobe in years to come, so invest in yourself!

How would you wear your Designer Dress? If you have chosen a dress that is covered in details like beading, embroidery and floral then its best that you choose to wear minimum jewellery and make-up, so the dress will shine by itself. The opposite is true if you were wearing a plain simple dress. Then you can opt out to wear more jewellery pieces and add some stronger shades of colour to your eyes and lips. Heels would be the perfect accessory to complete the final look!

Remember, that a designer dress can be worn on all occasions and events. We can forget about the price tag and enjoy wearing a dress that would last us forever.

NIGHT

  • 1. Shoes – Alexander McQueen
  • 2. Handbag – Marc Jacobs
  • 3. Studs – Tony Burch
  • 4. Bracalet – Tony Burch

DAY

  • 1. Shoes –YSL
  • 2. Handbag – Steve Madden
  • 3. Jacket – Ralph Lauren
  • 4. Earrings – Alex Monroe

Today we present Bottega Veneta dress that you can easily wear to office or evening party of course everything’s in accessories that you pick. Let’s start with daytime – Ralph Lauren perfectly tailored sand jacket with satin lapels (this one could be use for nighttime as well), classic shoes from Yves Saint Laurent and handcrafted earrings embellished with amethysts – sweet, but in a same way sophisticated. Usually for daytime we recommend pastel, black or white handbags, but why not try something different? Color doesn’t mean ‘night only’ right? So here we have leather tote from Steve Madden, we picked yellow one but is available also in black, cobalt, emerald or orange (this ‘orange’ more looks like red for me, but you know…’artists’ they got different perception of the world ;) ). Nighttime and party …or dinner? Alexander McQueen’s shoes! I’m amazed! Black, leather with gold studs. They would be the same like every ‘punk rock-style’ high heels with studs or spikes (Louboutin), but they are not, so what is so unique about them? Heel. Curved marbleized heel that measures approximately 140mm/ 5.5 inches. It’s one of these little details that can change everything and let you fall in love in this and not the other shoes. We also picked clip-on studs and matching bracelet by Tony Burch. But still we need our cherry on top! God have sent us Marc Jacobs! I love this guy, you’ll always find something for yourself, if its classic tote or extraordinary clutch. Our proposition is neon yellow bag! Only for confident crazy woman!

Ps. You can be sure that you won’t get lost with this bag ladies!

Have a great day/night! See you soon!

For clutch we chose Alexander McQueen and Covered in shimmering crystals black pumps by Valentino. Heel measures approximately 115mm/ 4.5 inches.

Fashion and the slave labour - Interns
Murphy Alex

GRACE CODDINGTON , the US Vogue creative director in the New York Magazine admitted that the interns at the US Vogue are somewhat abused. She explained that work experience placements in fashion industry are a great opportunity but also admits that those who are given the opportunity are somewhat made to do mundane tasks.

They're there to learn and observe. I think there are a lot of interns that feel very entitled. They think we owe them something. Good ones come through though. You really notice them.

She says that the less inspiring tasks given to fashion interns during their placements are well worth it in the end and that students should make the most of their time at the successful publications.

"I'm sure they are somewhat abused and we do send them out to get an awful lot of cups of coffee, but they're learning all the time,” she told the New York Magazine. "They're there to learn and observe. I think there are a lot of interns that feel very entitled. They think we owe them something. Good ones come through though. You really notice them."

In her new memoir which is due to be release in November she will reveal her life in fashion as a model and at the helm of Vogue. She also pointed out that it will not be a tell-all. "I'm 70. I was a model. I've been in fashion 55 years and with Vogue 20 years. I'm not telling secret stories,” she told the magazine. "I'm not writing ugly bad things to get back at anyone. This book's not gossipy. It's more a record. I've kept a diary since I was a tiny kid trying to find my way, and going through all my written records reminds me of shoots and jogs my memory."

She also mentioned that she regretted throwing out her old clothes and not keeping the beautiful Yves Saint Laurent outfit she acquired in the past. The fashion icon ought to have taken a while to realise the value of antiquities.

London Fashion Week
Vera

Just after New York, Milan and Paris, London's Fashion Week is 'must be' of every person involved in The Fashion World. Here is the place where we can discover new talents, inspirations and trends for spring/summer 2012.

Most of the shows are presented in Somerset House. The top duet Basso&Brooke is well known for its unconventional patterns and overprints. Also this time they did not disappoint us, collection was fresh and full of the life.

Geometric patterns combined with floral themes.

Nicole Farhi and Paul Costelloe are totally opposite of the Basso&Brooke - Paul stayed in the light colors like white and ecru and second designer started with pastel just to turn to flashy yellow, orange and pink.

'inspired by the dark nature of cubo-futurism'

For special attention definitely deserves Georgia Hardinge, whose collection was 'inspired by the dark nature of cubo-futurism'. Her spectacular show seemed to be made just to take us to another dimension, very futuristic but in a same way easy to wear everyday.

minimalistic and classic, colors most of all nude and black&white

Another interesting show was the one of exclusive polish brand La Mania by Joanna Przetakiewicz. Her style is minimalistic and classic, colors most of all nude and black&white, La Mania's purpose is to create elegant dresses but also very practical and comfortable. Dresses can be wear during the day and for the evening as well, just with a different accessories. Key- color of the brand is white as the mark of the brand 'little white dress'. Special guest of La Mania was top model Anja Rubik, who worn long gray&pink striped dress.

We will be reporting back to you about every important news and information regarding designers and collections from one of the most important event in the fashion calendar.

Inside a fashion collection of Dilek Hanif
Ruth Holloway

Dilek Hanif is a Turkish fashion designer who has been designing haute couture since 1990.
It is her latest spring/summer 2012 collection that has caught my eye this season and what I will be talking about in this article.

From ballet style dresses to goddess like gowns this collection was a play on the colour gold. Gold with white, gold on black etc. The tones and embellishment working together in a harmonious collection.

This is an amazing dress full of dreamy ruffles. It really captured my eye, luxurious and beautifully made she looks like she has stepped out of a ballet.

This dress is so pretty I can see young girls wearing it to a prom. I love how the gold and the black embellishment work together. Layered and tailored to perfection this is a stand out piece to me.

This is like a cross between a swimming costume and a dress. The gold embellishment screams for attention, this looks like a movie star on a red carpet, glamorous, eye catching and unforgettable.

This dress reminds me of a coffee truffle, look at all those beautiful layers. It looks good enough to eat. Very chocolate like, who could resist a dress like this?

his is a play with black and gold. This is a dress fit for royalty. The slit showing a bit of legs gives it sex appeal. And the gold embellishment makes it look luxurious and expensive.

So I’ve highlighted some of my favourite key pieces of the collection but every piece fits together as a collection like a jigsaw. So I’d recommend you check out the full collection.

How to make your own masquerade mask
Ruth Holloway

You will need

  • A paper Mache masquerade mask (you can buy this in a craft store or online)
  • Glitter paints in any colour you want
  • Paintbrush
  • Fake feathers in any shade you want (you can buy these at a craft store)
  • Glue (you can use glue dots, a glue gun or PVA glue)
  • Embellishments such as gems, beads, flower shapes if you wish to add these to your mask (optional)

Step one

Get out your paintbrush and cover the mask with your chosen shade of glitter paints. You might like to combine two colours even. Lay it on quite thick so it sparkles and covers every area.

Leave it to dry overnight to make sure it’s really dry before moving on the next stage.

Step two

Lay out your feathers against the top of your mask. Once your happy with your design glue them to the top of your mask with your chosen form of glue. I was inspired by the Black swan. So I wanted to include a little of the White swan in there too. The Black swan taking dominance over it.

Step three

If you bought any embellishments stick these one wherever you want. I chose to stick on flower shapes with a gem in the middle.

Step four

your going to be the belle of the ball, your mask is complete, well done! This is my finished mask.

Advice on Fashion Illustration
Ruth Holloway

The first step is finding inspiration. This can come from many sources; pictures in books, places around you, nature, architecture, art, even the very tea cup you drink out of. Find a theme that really grips you. For example I’m very inspired by the patterns on bugs. Then gather together pictures and maybe a few fabrics, anything you can find that really speaks to you about your theme. Put these together on a big piece of cardboard. Or use clip arts on Google. This is called a mood board. For example I did a mood board on the seven deadly sins. I pasted images from Google that symbolised lust to me like passion, lips, romance etc.

This is a mood board for wrath, fire, angry red, lighting, violence etc.
In sloth mood board I did bed, sleeping baby, laying in pyjamas.

Now look at all the things you have collected on your theme and start making some sketches. If you’re like me and have difficulty sketching figures there are books and internet sites that offer free copyright figure images. You can then draw on top of the figure or cut out papers and stick the outfits on. You can easily buy patterned papers for scrapbooking and use these as your ‘fabrics’.

Here are two examples of designs based on insects; the first is inspired by a stag beetle, the second by a moth. The figure models are from a book of figures by despeche’s top model series of books and design sets.

Now after you’ve done some sketches look and see if they are cohesive by this I mean do they fit together like a collection, do they have similar colouring, shapes, fabrics, features? Now consider clothes that are usually in collections like sportswear, day dresses, evening dress, and so on. You may just want to create a singular stand alone piece too.

These are two designs based on the seven deadly sins, the pink one is lust and the second one is wrath. I used figures from stardoll.com. I used fancy papers for these two designs that are representing the type of fabrics I would use if they were real clothes.

Now you can leave them as sketches or move unto making them real. It’s up to you. The most important thing is to have fun with your chosen theme and really enjoy your sketching. Because if you’re passionate about it, it will show and delight others.

RE-TELL 101
Joshua Alexander

Oh to be the very first customer in a store at very start of the retail day is something to truly behold! I mean everything is nice and folded, crisp, sized in their respective places, and even colorized. You can go and find exactly what you are looking for in exactly the right size (if available of course) and skip and frolic to heart’s desire to the register and make out well before you check book ever knew what hit it. This sound like a dream come true for serious shopper, however, lets do a reality check.

however, let's do a reality check

Ok, now it is 1pm in the afternoon on a Saturday. You walk into your favorite store to pick up a simple pair of jeans and be on your merry little way to your other hundred errands. Wow, there are tons of people doing the same thing that you are, shopping. What else are they doing…making a mess of what used to be a perfect set-up. You can’t find anything that you are looking for and all the associates are running around trying to help as many people as they can at one time. Oh how the story truly begins to unfold. It’s now time to RE-tell the story on what really happens in retail…the other side of the what really happens after the doors open.

Indisputably, if you are in fashion, you will shop, FACT. And, unless you are my clients, you will probably have to shop for yourself or someone else. Now, in all my years of being in fashion I have never heard the other side of the story about what goes on in the retail stores so I decided to investigate the matter and pick the brains of some of my friends who are those poor defenseless sales associates that deal the average consumer every day. After speaking with my very good friends who tell me EVERYTHING that happens in their work day from assisting customers I decided to create my top ten things of what NOT to do as a customer in stores. Let’s begin our Re-tell 101 class shall we?

Indisputably, if you are in fashion, you will shop FACT

#10

Do no call the store before the store opens to try and put something on hold. They have store hours for a reason people. If you really want something that bad call them at exactly 10am or whenever they open or better yet, be at the store when it opens so you can get exactly what you want. Most of the time the store team and the associates are preparing the store for you to have an awesome shopping experience and they cannot accomplish their focus if they have to constantly stop what they are doing to try and help you shop before the time over the phone. Think about it for a moment…if you are at work a few minutes early and the phone at your desk starts ringing before you appointed start time what are the chances you are going to pick up the phone to start doing your job before the clock starts?

#9

Please do not take out the frustrations of your day on the associates and managers trying to assists you in the store unless they are the ones responsible for creating them, and even then be professional. Now I understand your boss was getting on your nerve that day and you could have just smacked the mess out of them for giving you an extra task right before you were getting off, however, that associate had nothing to do with your bad day so do not cause them to have a bad day on your behalf. People always want to lay blame but I say place blame where blame is due. Do not go down the poor little associate’s throat because the store no longer has an item in stock or carries a certain size. It’s not their fault, they are not the ones who make the clothes, that’s why most stores have a little thing called a survey on their receipts or online websites.

#8

If you see a store is a little short staffed do not get mad at the associate for having to leave you to go and help other customers in a store full of people. Who are you, Jennifer Lopez? What are you Ringo Star? Clearly, you can see that the associate has their hands full so why not have a little patience. I can understand if they are rude and unprofessional, but if they are making sure to get to everyone in a timely fashion the least you can do is cut them a little slack. It is not their fault the staff is short. If anything find the manager and complain to them so that they might call in someone to help out. Just keep in mind though, by the time the help arrives you would have already left the store.

#7

People, please read the back of your coupons and stop holding up the lines trying to make a coupon do what you already know it cannot. I have witnessed this first hand and it amazed me at how persistent some customers get about their coupons. I’ll be in line, with the exact same discount in my hand, knowing that coupon give a certain discount and am just in shock when the customer tries and tells the associate something different. Are you serious! Stop holding up the line with those shenanigans and move. Stop trying to telling the associate how another store would do this or that for you; you should have went there instead if you got the hook up with them.

#6

Stop leaving your mess in the fitting rooms for other people to have to clean up after. Those associates are not your maids people, point. You did not just check into the Hilton so stop looking for room service and house keeping. Take your food and drinks out with you when you leave the fitting rooms; and you wonder why there is gum on the floor. And do not be acting all pure and innocent when you want to try on that shirt. You know what shirt I am talking about, the one that’s all wrapped up nice and neat in it’s package with the pins still in it…that shirt. Now you know you could have tried the other one on that was already opened. You do know those pins get stuck in the seat for the next customer to sit on? You can also put some of the items you tried on back where you got it from that way other people will be able to find their sizes too.

#5

Why do you have those poor associates call all over the world to find one item and then you don’t even go and pick it up after they wasted fifty minutes on the phone doing customer service for you. The common decency would be to call the store where the item was placed on hold and tell them you are not going to come get it any more, that way some one else can purchase it. And then on top of that, while the associate is on the phone for you, twenty other people are not able to get the help they need because associates are calling looking for things. I can understand one or two stores but the whole company list you have them call? Just order it online.

#4

Quit saying you’re “just looking” if you already was coming to shop the store. I have heard that line all the time from people, “oh, I’m just looking…” you’re just lying. Simply tell the associate if you intend on buying something or not and that you will let them know if you need their assistance, that way the associate will not have to keep asking you questions to see what they can help you find. And while you are wondering the store, do what you said and “just look.” Stop picking up shirts that are already on the mannequins for you to see how they look and try and refold them back. If you start wanting to see shirts than you need to call an associate over to help you get the right size so you do not mess up the entire table trying to find some thing that you more than like did not have any intension of purchasing in the first place. There have been many times I have went into a store knowing I just wanted to see what was new and when asked, “How can I help you?” I simply told them what my intensions were and that I would call them over if I needed their assistance. It works people!

#3

If you do not plan on watching your children in the store leave them at home. The store is not a play ground for your kids to run a muck in. I have been in countless numbers of stores where people children just seem like they are possessed, running in and out of fixtures, screaming and yelling, and carrying on, and the parent is oblivious. Oh, I wanted to tell those kids to sit down some where and learn to mind some body. I mean, really, if you let your child just play in the jewelry section and tangle up all the necklaces, or you going to stay there and untangle them? And please take your kids to the bathroom before you enter the store and don’t ignore them when they tell you they have to go to the potty…they are saying that for a reason.

#2

You knew you wore that outfit before you tried to return it so stop playing innocent and telling the associate you don’t know where those stains came from...they must have been on the garment before you bought it and you did not see them. Seriously! I remember an instance in a store I was in where I was in line and a customer was having a fit because she could not return a dress. The dress was sold with a tag that stated, “This dress cannot be returned if this tag is removed.” Can you read? And on top of that, she did not even have her receipt and the store policy was no exchanges or returns without a valid receipt. I mean really? What were you thinking?

#1

Get off your phone! How can you be upset with the associate for not helping you if you are too busy being involved in a phone conversation? No body wants to hear what you and other person on your phone is talking about either so tone it down. Oh, and how can you complain about the service to your extended phone buddy if you are not allowing the associate to properly service you. Hang up the phone.

I must tell you, hearing some of these stores and even the ones that did not make the list were hilarious. But, there are two sides to have story and I strong felt that time had come for the retailers to make their voices known. So, customer beware, what you do in the stores are spread abroad and without mercy.

Can I get a color check ?
Joshua Alexander
From the Simple but classy Magazine Edition

Summer is here for another month or so and that wonderful time of the year known as Autumn is sweeping the globe as fashion houses around the world prepare for the release of their new season color palates. Now as most fashion stylist look to the runway, my eyes are more directed to the consumers as they begin their journey on “filling the closet space.” More specifically, I am eager to see if my fellow man will disappoint me yet again with what I call the dark syndrome, dun dun duuuuuunnnn.

As I am out and about shopping different department stores and boutiques I have my eyes set on purchasing my usual color spectrum of reds, oranges, greens, tans, blues, etc. In my shopping experience I see majority of the other guys, who may not be as fashion conscious as I am, cowarding in the shadows of the fabrics with their blacks, dark grays, and deep navy blues. I completely understanding wanting to have dark colors for creating a slim silhouette and hiding some unwanted curvaceous-ness; I’m with you all on that one. But when you are buying the same colors year round, I have to ask the question, are you colorfide of color?

Allow me to reassure you men: there is nothing wrong with adding some color to your life; in fact it’s quite healthy and very complimentary to your skin. I must assume that most men just don’t know how to colorize their wardrobe, but then again, that’s why we have designers and fashion stylist like myself who can help you come out of the dark ages. We must not be afraid of the color wheel but embrace it. Colors don’t have feminine attributes, only people do so if anyone tells you otherwise they ARE lying to you. I don’t care if it’s your wife, girlfriend, buddy, boss, work out partner, significant other, son, daughter or the Pope, men can wear any color that looks good on them, POINT!

Now, most of the time other people’s opinions prevent most men from venturing out of their comfort zones and trying the magenta shirt or tie, or golden yellow scarf, or even that teal leather jacket. Oh, and don’t let me mention the color pink, that’s a smack in the face for sure, but it shouldn’t be. Time and time again I have dressed hundreds of men in all types of colors and broken them out of that dark syndrome and they always end up looking one hundred times better than they have in a very long time. Next thing you know I am hearing reviews from how many compliments that got and how great they felt walking out of the house the next day knowing that they look their very best. Colors can make your day if you know how to wear them.

I highly recommend these color choices for the daring gentlemen who is ready to face fashion dead on for this up coming Autumn season:

• Shades of green like olive and forest and browns typically in the earth tones • Deep reds and brilliant oranges, and not to mention the golden yellows and magentas • Rich Navy blues, teals, aqua greens and royal blues. This season you want the rich saturation of color to come through in your wardrobe.

Now, if you just can’t seem to break away from the depths of night, then try to bring color through your accessories like ties and suspenders, maybe in belts, and shoes…socks even and t-shirts or graphic t-shirts. Make some type of attempt to add color and make it visible somewhere in your closet, underwear doesn’t count unless that is all you plan on wearing in the fall and temperatures are definitely going to be dropping, so Fall won’t be the only thing that’s happening in that case. And yes, pattern shirts are going to be a big hit this coming season so don’t run from the purple prints and burgundy stripes. Go small print plaid if you can, larger print plaid can be a bit of a pain to coordinate with in the rest of your closet if you don’t have the right colors to mix and match them well. Also, keep in mind too that colors make a great solution when trying to match something with some distressed or stoned washed denim. It makes a statement, “I am a man and I am not afraid of fashion!” It’s better to play color safe if you don’t know how, or just swallow your pride and ask for help.

Oh, and dare I say the word cardigan, oh me oh my. Yes, let color show up in your layering too. There is a way to layer colors in your outer covers like cardigans and button down sweaters, merino wool V- neck sweaters, turtle necks, and sweater vest. Please don’t get locked into the algal routine. If that is the extent of your pattern selection then you are in dyer need of some fashion rescue. Don’t run from the big knit sweaters either men especially with a nice pair of jeans, button down shirt or graphic t-shirt, and some remarkable dress or casual shoes, preferably a boot and you’ll be surprised how good your look. And if you have been hitting the gym like yours truly, then replace that graphic t-shirt with a V neck under shirt and let your physique really come through. Remember guys, colors are your friend, not your ex-girlfriends. So, be empowered my fellow fashionistos, be colorful and colorfide this fall season. Go forth and make me proud.

Fashion Report - Autumn/Winter 2011
Sofia Naas
From the Simple but classy Magazine Edition

This summer has brought with it some amazing fashion and colours enough to paint the rainbow. What’s not to love? Furthermore, isn’t it more fun to get dressed in the summer rather than the winter? You don’t have to think about wearing a warm coat over your amazing ensemble when going out and you can choose which ever pair of ridiculously high heels you want. This season has made sure that we are high on colour for the dark season we all know is coming.

I know that all of us are enjoying summer and all the beauty it brings, but I can’t help my self being curious about AW 11/12. Even though you feel like you haven’t completed your summer wardrobe yet, it’s time to think about next season and its trends. No stress though. Enjoy the days of warm weather and sun we have left, but make sure you stay ahead. And you do have a reason to look forward to the end of the summer; next season brings good things to a closet near you.

I have rounded up the autumn/winter trends for 2011 that you should make sure you don’t miss.

Spots

Stella McCartney

Spots and dots are super trendy next season. To avoid the Minnie Mouse-look, don’t over match and choose flowing fabrics, chiffon and feminine cuts in black, white and dark colours.

Color

Gucci

Good news for all of you who want to bring a bit of summer into autumn and winter. The colours of this season go a bit darker and stick with us through the darkest times of the year. Wine, military green, orange, purple and blue. Mix and match and you’ll be the brightest one at the party this autumn.

1. Tie hem top, Dorothy Perkins, £26 2. Wide blue trousers, River Island, £35 3. Burgundy platform sandals, Topshop, £78 4. Envelope clutch, asos.com, £20 5. Bangles, River Island, £14.99

To make the style more feminine (not all of us can pull off wearing only oversized clothing), add feminine jewellery and a belt around your waist.

1. Shirt (from the men’s section), H&M,, £24.99 2. Leather tucklock briefcase, asos.com, £85 3. Black asymmetric jacket, Topshop, £55 4. Black stiletto, Kurt Geiger, £110 5. Tassel earrings, asos.com, £16 6. Leather belt, H&M, £6.99 7. Burgundy super skinny jeans, River Island, £30

To Sag or Not to Sag…Should That Even be an Option?
Joshua Alexander

It’s a beautiful day outside. You’re waking up from sleeping in late in your nifty metropolitan high rise or one bed room apartment. By happenstance you take a look outside your window and then, BAM! There it is right before your very eyes, the infamous boxer and boxer briefs starring you down with their semi plaid patterns and solid dark colors, white if you’re lucky. However, inquiring minds around the globe are puzzled as to how this can be when these very inconspicuous underwear become a very prevalent outer accessory in some young chap’s trousers. Why is this? What ever happen to the meaning and definition of under + wear = out of sight and out of mind underwear?

Ok, Ok, Ok…We have all seen it, witnessed it, and may have even participants of this bizarre and quite peculiar phenomenon, sagging of the pants. Now, the real question is, WHY? I am sure we have all asked ourselves this question time and time again, and no one seems to be coming up with an answer or solution to this trend that should have only been a fad left in the 1990’s of the last millennia. I posed a question to my fellow fashionitas and fashionistos out in the world: To Sag or Not to Sag…Should that even be an Option? And with a resounding majority, NO was all I got back. Then my mind starting thinking and reflecting on the response…If everyone is saying no to sagging of the pants, why are people still doing it? I’m sure you can see my perplexity in the back and forth nature of this dialogue.

. Pant sagging is not fashionable, not fashion forward, and just down right distasteful. It has no ounce of swag to it expect you trying to keep your pants from falling all the way to the floor while trying to walk up the stairs.

What most people don’t know, and by now it should be common knowledge, is that pants sagging started a very long time in what we call the, prison system. Yes my friend and friendetts, sagging your pants while in jail or prison meant that you were somebody’s love toy, blanket cover, and a whole other list of intimate activities while behind bars. Visa vie, you were their trick that turned at their beckon and call. Now, I know we maybe feeling like we’re behind bars due to our task master named, Economic Crisis, but as I look around me I can’t see any physical bars denoting any type of prison or jail cell. We might need some legalized fashion police on every corner but that is beside the point. The point is, sagging of the pants MUST come to an end TODAY!

Let’s be rational here people. When you have great fashion icons like Diesel, Armani Exchange, Guess, Energie, Miss Sixty, D2 , TopMan, and a conglomerate of others, who design and create outstanding denim, slacks, trousers, shorts, and you name it for us to cover our rears and still make them look good, why try and fix what isn’t broken? Why try and reinvent the wheel of how to wear your pants? I understand you just bought some great men’s and women’s underwear that have really cute designs of anime characters, superheroes, lace, and now making a special presentation, the “G” String, NO BODY WANTS TO SEE THAT. Save that display of the undies for your significant other or the locker room if you must “show them off.” Sagging gives a completely different meaning to the phrase, “low rise jeans.” Oh, and then there are those brilliantly intelligent young chaps who figure using a belt while sagging counters the epidemic…not even close, that’s even more ironic. I find it utterly amusing to see these young guys and gals try and walk next to their friends, girlfriends and boyfriends while trying to join the penguin club. Hilarious!

Let me say this, don’t be swayed by the hip hoppers, rap artists, so called urban fashion movement, or wanna be ganstas on these music videos and cinema flicks. Pant sagging is not fashionable, not fashion forward, and just down right distasteful. It has no ounce of swag to it expect you trying to keep your pants from falling all the way to the floor while trying to walk up the stairs. How can you ever expect anyone to take you seriously if you are standing before them with your pants below your knees? Now, I get the freedom of expression and how fashion helps us to reveal who we are and so forth and so on. Considering that many people are still on the road to self discovery and finding out their true expression and identity, let’s not use this as an excuse and justification any longer people. Let us all put on our big boy pants, zip up that maturity, and represent ourselves in a manner that will make any fashionista and fashionisto proud. Let’s be done with the sagging epidemic…it’s a new day!

SS13 Christian Dior Collection

By : Salma Sabar
